Ratchet spanners are an evolution of conventional spanners and outwardly the two appear very similar. However in a ratchet spanner the closed end incorporates a ratchet mechanism meaning fasteners can be tightened or removed faster and more easily. Ratchet spanners can also be used in conventional areas where conventional ratchets cannot reach.
