The 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is the replacement supercar for the aging Lamborghini Murcielago. The Murcielago has been around since 2001, and despite several upgrades to both the bodywork and the engineering, it's time for some new blood.

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 brings with a new architecture, but the engine is still a revised version of the 6.5 litre, 60-degree V12 monster found in its predecessor and the Reventon. The engine has been thoroughly worked over by Lamborghini's engineers, and it now produces 690 horsepower (700PS) @ 8,250 rpm, and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque @ 5,500 rpm.

The power is sent to all four wheels through a new seven-speed sequential automatic gearbox which offers lighting fast shifts, especially when in the most aggressive "Corsa" mode. Under normal circumstances, the computer controlled AWD system of the Aventador LP700-4 sends 70 percent of its power to the rear wheels, however it can reduce this down to as little as 40 percent if it feels the driver's getting into trouble.

As far as the Aventador LP700-4's styling goes, it's immediately recognizable as a Lamborghini. Low-slung, impossibly wide, and displaying such a steeply raked windscreen it may as well be a sunroof. The doors, of course, don't open in the normal manner, and like all top-of-the-range Lambos since the Countach the Aventador features scissor doors.
