The
Lotus Esprit began life as a 1972 concept car created by Giorgetto
Giugiaro for Lotus. Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus, decided
to put the Esprit into production 3 years later in 1975.
The Lotus Esprit featured a steel backbone chassis, fully independent
suspension, a fiberglass body and mid-mounted engine.
As the years went by the Lotus Esprit went through many changes
including both engine upgrades and styling enhancements. By
1993, when the Lotus Esprit Turbo SE appeared the nose was restyled,
sideskirts were added, there was a rear wing and the interior
had been improved.
The Lotus Esprit Turbo SE was powered by a 349 horsepower twin
turbocharged
V8 developed by Lotus, this was mated to a six speed gearbox.
A far cry from the original Esprit's 160 horsepower, 2.0 litre
4 cylinder and 5 speed transmission.
